Mediterranean muse: The listed manor Le Rossignol in the Markgräflerland is a carefully renovated, atmospheric place that combines history and zeitgeist with the lightness of southern France.
The border triangle between Basel, Freiburg and Colmar is known for its mild climate, lovely landscapes, vast vineyards and small winegrowing villages. For 200 years, the historic estate in the village center of Blansingen has overlooked the multifaceted Rhine plain – from the foothills of the Black Forest to the Vosges Mountains and the Roche Towers. The renovated ensemble features a large barn, a coach house and two winegrowers’ cottages grouped around a courtyard with Mediterranean plants and a southern flair. There is a communal garden with pool and fireplace.
During the renovation, great care was taken to preserve the original appearance to a large extent – from the monumental quarry stone walls of the barn to the modernly interpreted wooden cladding of the coach house and the plastered walls of the winegrowers’ houses. New elements of steel, exposed concrete and oak wood, emphasize the contrast between old and new.
The historic Le Logis barn now houses four maisonette apartments with sheltered sunny balconies, sleeping areas upstairs, and light-filled living, cooking, and dining spaces under the roof. On the ground floor of the barn is another apartment for two people – Le Patio, a thoughtfully designed spatial wonder with a glass arched doorway overlooking the courtyard. The winegrower’s house La Maison breathes history and captivates with its half-timbering, historic tiles, an open wooden staircase and the wonderful Blue Salon. As the largest holiday dwelling, La Remise offers a very special ambience for up to six people. A filigree lamella construction is arranged in front of the large glass front. Once the artists’ residence of the previous owners, L’Atelier is now a tranquil accommodation spread over two floors, with a bright studio window and a fireplace in the bedroom, as well as an outdoor seating area right next to the old fig tree.
In addition to the fireplace, the Petit Salon, the cooking workshop, the wine vault La Cave and the “village shop” are all inviting places to get together. Sheer savoir-vivre!
What to do
Walking in the vineyards (Märkgräfler Wiiwegli with stops in the small Straußenwirtschaften), hiking and biking tours in the Black Forest and the Vosges, swimming in the outdoor pool, wine tasting and regional cuisine (eg. at Bürgeln Castle with the best view), inspiring excursions to the art and culture metropolis of Basel, to the humanistic, laid-back Freiburg or to Mühlhausen, huge farmers' market and shopping in Lörrach, discovering architecture and design (e.g. Vitra Design Museum, Goetheanum, Notre-Dame-du-Haut by Le Corbusier).
