Frisian and colourful: Waaster Jügem 8 — WJ8 for short — in the small, charming North Sea resort of Utersum is one of the few detached houses on the island of Föhr and, in addition to its (mono)chromatic archi­tecture, has a par­ti­cu­larly extensive garden with a par­tially unob­s­tructed view.

At first glance, the newly built holiday home with its reused, his­toric red and white clinker bricks and thatched roof resembles the tra­di­tional Frisian houses of the region. Inside, it sur­prises with a generous 240 square metres, con­tem­porary floor plans, high, bright rooms and modern fur­nis­hings.

As you enter the house, you find yourself in the open-plan kitchen with counter and dining area, whose double height is empha­sised by the large sliding window and sky­light and the white interior design. Two pas­sages lead through to the adjoining living room, which invites you to spend cosy hours on the colourful sofa in front of the tunnel fire­place, which also warms the dining room on the other side. The four bed­rooms for a total of eight people and the three bath­rooms are spread over the attic and basement. If a desk is needed for undis­turbed work, the separate study is the perfect place. The high­light on the top floor is cer­tainly the over­sized hammock, where not only children like to “hang out” and read. Occa­sional pink ele­ments or brightly coloured fur­niture break up the clear, white interior design.

A second ent­rance, which can be reached via a wooden walkway, leads directly into the brightly coloured mud room, where — as the name sug­gests — dirty shoes, jackets, beach bags and sup­plies can be stored. Next to it is a spa­cious sauna area with its own shower and direct access to the garden. There is a bar­becue for warm summer evenings and the garage is perfect for storing bicycles. These are the qui­ckest way to get to the nearby beach.

What to do

Swimming and bathing, water sports of all kinds — from surfing to kiting to stand-up paddling, the most beautiful sunset on the island awaits you in the evening hours on the beach of Utersum, including a beach chair, which is freely available to guests of the house during their stay. Otherwise, you can take wonderful walks on the beach and explore the island by bike (bike hire right next door).
