The StadtmauerQuartiere (town wall quarters) are two small holiday flats in the middle of the historic centre of Freinsheim, a small town in the Palatinate region. The townscape is characterised by a historical town wall with towers and gates. The StadtmauerQuartiere are located directly at and partly even on this wall. The angular property, which essentially dates back to the 19th century, is divided into the main house, the section integrating the town wall and an outbuilding. This structure was maintained in the course of the renovation. Due to earlier interventions, only a few historical elements on the façade and inside the building are preserved. The apartments are designed in a contemporary, clear design vocabulary that contrasts with the historical context but fits in sensitively. The town wall was restored in accordance with preservation requirements and integrated into the design concept.
The house is divided vertically into two apartments, each of which extends over two floors. They have an open-plan layout with kitchen and dining area on the ground floor and a bedroom on the first floor. The apartment Tagelöhner 1, which has a floor space of approx. 40 square meters, has a special feature: a roof terrace facing southwest with a view of the green moat. The 45-square-meter apartment Tagelöhner 2, on the other hand, has a living area where the historical surroundings can be experienced particularly well. The unrendered exterior wall shows the old stones of the town wall, and through a three-winged window one looks at two fortified towers, the town wall walkway and the moat.
The restriction to only few materials and colours gives the apartments a quiet ambience. Stairs and windows are made of oak. The floor is smoothed over in taupe throughout. Walls and ceilings are finished in white, as are the pieces of furniture by designer Nils Holger Moormann, which are made of white birch multiplex. These are complemented by fixtures and furniture, which are specially designed for the house and made of the same material. They make perfect use of the space: e.g. beds that can be pushed apart to serve as sofas, or a wardrobe hanging above the stairs.
From the inner courtyard, visitors can enter a small wine lounge, whose bench and wall panelling are made of the old floorboards of the house. The theme of views into, out of and through the apartments, which has been consistently applied throughout the building, is also continued in the outdoor area. The slats in the courtyard gate can be opened and allow views of the town wall or insights into the courtyard.
What to do
Walks in the vineyards, hiking in the Palatinate Forest, cycling in the Rhine valley or in the Mountainbikepark Pfälzerwald, climbing in the Dahner Felsenland, playing golf in the Golfgarten Deutsche Weinstraße Dackenheim; visits to historical sites (e.g. Hambach Castle, Speyer Cathedral, Nibelungs City of Worms, Heidelberg Castle, Lorsch Monastery); enjoying art, culture and urban life in Mannheim, Heidelberg, Speyer, Frankfurt, Karlsruhe; culinary excursions through the Palatinate region, visits to vinotheques and vineyards.
Why we like this house
The old structures have been transformed into modern holiday apartments, where you live more autonomously than in a hotel, but more compactly than in a house. The historical context and the modern design of the apartments with refined details make up the charm of the StadtmauerQuartiere.
This house is great for
For couples who love wine and architecture. Also great for the joint holiday of two couples who each appreciate their own retreat.
