Below the village of Verdings, architect Martin Gruber has planned an organic free form next to his own farmstead, which will be rented out as an extraordinary guest house. Like a nature observatory in the midst of the South Tyrolean mountains, the contemporary glass pavilion affords a captivating view across the valley. The design absorbs the topography of its immediate surroundings with its glass envelope and blurs the boundaries between nature and building. The landscape flows through the house, which is designed as one open-plan space. Atmospheres created by the light and weather during the course of the day and the seasons change the interior and become its designers. With its green, sweeping concrete roof, the building, viewed when approaching from the village, can only be made out as a contour in the landscape.
The 65 sqm Freiform was furnished with high-quality natural materials such as oak and loden in a restrained design to focus attention on the essential, the view of nature. Guests can make use of a freestanding kitchen unit with a cantilevered dining table, seating furniture by a revolving fireplace and a daybed that can be separated with a curtain. The bedroom, located between the bathroom and the living area, offers privacy despite the open layout due to its shape and positioning at the slope. In summer, fruit trees shade the house, and an electrically controlled outdoor curtain serves as additional privacy screen and sun protection.
What to do
In spring/summer: hiking, mountain hikes, mountain biking; in autumn: Törgellen, a South Tyrolean tradition that unites local culinary delights with hiking; in winter: ski tours, tobogganing (rental on site). Various excursion possibilities in the surrounding area (e.g. Latzfonser Kreuz, Sabiona Monastery, the picturesque little town of Klausen, Villanders Mine, Brixen for sightseeing and shopping, and much more).
Why we like this house
A glass refuge - here you are in the middle of nature and yet you feel secure. In front of the glass façade, a dramatic and beautiful natural spectacle is shown in widescreen format.
