The Maremma is considered the Wild West of Tuscany. After all, everything here is a little rougher and more authentic than in other regions. Between natural beaches, dense macchia forests, picturesque tuff stone and real cowboys, the Butteri, Montemerano – one of the “Borghi più belli d’Italia”, the most beautiful villages in Italy – sits enthroned on a hill surrounded by olive groves. A settlement with a medieval structure not far from the Therme di Saturnia and the impressive thermal waterfalls Cascate del Mulino.
The Loft Montemerano is located in the heart of the narrow streets and is the third holiday project by architect Massimo Ghisi and his wife Vanna Bernardelli, two passionate art collectors from Mantua. The couple have extensively renovated the typical Maremma townhouse and transformed it into a modern living space where architecture, design and art come together in a historical setting. The result is an impressive hybrid of rustic charm, urban New York loft, gallery and Escher-like flair. ‘We wanted to preserve the context, but at the same time not deny the contemporary and essential style elements that we are drawn to,’ says Massimo Ghisi.
The simple entrance in the heart of the village gives no hint of the casual, light-filled loft behind it, which still exudes the spirit of the Maremma with its natural stone walls, wood beams and terracotta ceilings. Despite retaining its structure, the once gloomy, winding interior has been filled with light and space thanks to large windows and a clear, straight staircase.
The floor and staircase are reminiscent of polished concrete, but are actually made of local stone. The walls also form a harmonious contrast between rough natural stone and white-clad walls and ceilings, which emphasise the openness and spaciousness. The interior design combines design classics and vintage pieces with custom-made furniture, complemented by contemporary artworks from the owners’ own gallery in Mantua.
The house offers two bedrooms, a spacious, bright living room with a sofa bed, a generous dining area with a fully equipped kitchen and a comfortable bathroom. A laundry room in the basement adds to the comfort. Another highlight is the terrace at the highest point of the building, which invites you to enjoy breakfast outdoors or an aperitif in the evening – with a view of the rolling hills of the Maremma.
What to do
The thermal springs of Saturnia and the Cascate del Mulino are just a few minutes away, and there are numerous hiking and cycling trails, swimming in the sea (the beaches of Talamone, Argentario, Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano are approx. 45–60 minutes away), excursions to Niki de Saint Phalle's sculpture garden near Capalbio, the Alberese Nature Park, Etruscan archaeological sites or historic villages (e.g. Pitigliano, Scansano, Manciano, Magliano, Sorano and Sovana), Horse riding, golf, wine and olive oil tastings at local farms and wineries (e.g. Morellino di Scansano) or a visit to the 2-star restaurant Caino, just a few steps away from the apartment.
Why we like this house
Maremma cowboys, New York and Escher send their regards: the region's authenticity captured in subtle, loft-like architecture.
This house is great for

Owner
Massimo Ghisi and Vanna Bernardelli – architects and passionate art collectors – purchased Palazzo Beccaguti Cavriani in 2000 and personally oversaw its renovation and interior design down to the very last detail. They conceived their palazzo with the aim of living in direct contact with the artworks and with as little furniture as possible. Once or twice a year, they open their private art collection to the public, transforming the palazzo into an inspiring and ever-changing meeting place for artists and art lovers. Two further holiday projects, which stylishly combine art and context, have been realised on the Sicilian island of Pantelleria and in the small Tuscan village of Montemerano.
