Panoramahaus Usedom

In the Baltic seaside resort of Zinnowitz on the Island of Usedom, a family from Berlin has created a retreat from big-city life. The house is designed as a place of relaxation and inspiration and reflects the hosts’ penchant for architecture, design and art.

Plain elegance is the motto—both inside and out. The architecture is linear and reduced with white plastered surfaces and large windows on the ground floor, an upper floor clad with narrow Larch wood slats and a gently sloping copper roof. The building is transparent on the garden side and rather closed towards the front. The floor plan is designed so that the 170-square-metre house is spacious and open, yet also offers many possibilities for retreat. The kitchen with a long wooden table is the centre of the ground floor. Behind it there is a slightly separated sitting area by the fireplace. The living area is flanked on two sides by terraces—towards the garden with views of the countryside, on the street side with views to a courtyard-like front garden. This green courtyard is also visible from the sauna, which is located in the wellness area behind the kitchen. The sleeping area upstairs comprises three double bedrooms and two bathrooms. Gentle natural shades with dark highlights and the timeless interior determine the ambience of the rooms. The house is like a small gallery—works of art by well-known artists and emerging talents adorn walls everywhere. Book lovers will find literature and art books, music lovers a collection of records.

What to do

The house is located near the town centre with restaurants and shopping facilities. The beach can be reached by bike in a few minutes. Walks on the beach, water sports (swimming, kite surfing), bicycle tours (200 km of cycle paths connect the seaside resorts and the different sights on the island).

Why we like this house

The timeless, modern architecture was filled with a great deal of personality. Since the house was designed in the way the owners themselves like to live, it feels like a visit to (art-loving) friends. Perfect to relax and to broaden your horizon!

Owner

The idea for the house was born because we have often spent the summer on the island of Usedom over the last 15 years. We want to continue doing this in the future with our two daughters and create a place of our own for our family. Our aim was to make the house a retreat from the hectic city life in Berlin, a place where we can also spontaneously spend our weekends. We first of all wanted a house that we would feel very comfortable in ourselves—not a typical holiday home—something that would reflect our tastes, passions and interests. We wanted our house to have personality and be fully furnished with everything you need. Our guests take over the house exactly the way we would live in it.
