The Residenza Hortus in the historic center of the Sicilian Baroque town of Modica dates back to the 16th century and was probably part of the old castle or a church building. During the complex, ecological renovation of the dilapidated property much emphasis has been placed on maintaining its historic charm. The architecture with its old vaulted ceilings, wall niches, roughstone walls and lime plastered walls is supplemented with an elegantly minimalist furnishing. Arranged on several levels there are three bedrooms (each with ensuite bathroom) as well as the living room and kitchen with an impressive stone archway. A staircase made of iron and glass leads to the old cistern which has been converted into a wine cellar. Of course, a house named Hortus (Latin for garden) also has a garden: Hidden behind high walls you can relax in the hot tub or enjoy views of the old cathedral from the terrace.
