The Milchhof in Arnstadt catches the eye at first glance. The functional brick façade contrasts with the Renaissance and half-timbered houses of the Bach town on the edge of the Thuringian Forest. Built in 1928 by architect Martin Schwarz in the Bauhaus style, the building is an industrial structure that implemented the ideas of the architectural avant-garde in a special way: design-wise, production-wise and socially. The ramp where farmers used to deliver their fresh milk is now the entrance to an event venue with industrial charm. The 250 sqm former production hall with its 32 different types of white tiles can be used for events with up to 150 people. Attached to it are four exhibition rooms, which are used by young artists. The building is being successively renovated and developed as an art and cultural centre.
The Milchhof Arnstadt is an architectural monument of international standing and has been listed as an individual monument since 1994. On the occasion of the Bauhaus100 anniversary in 2018, it was selected by a jury of experts as a significant modernist building in Germany and included in the “Grand Tour of Modernism in Germany“.
