Ferienhaus In den Söllen in Mittenwalde, Blankensee / DE – Germany, Brandenburg

Holiday home In den Söllen

A house tells a story. About the glacial, gently rolling landscape of the Uckermark, its old walls and their traditions. Combined with modern design and many new things in every detail. The house In den Söllen, outside the small village of Blankensee, stands all by itself. It has grown into its surroundings of meadows and fields, between which the Sölle – small circular ponds – appear like islands. While the house is protected by an orchard to the east and west, a flowering meadow that stretches as far as the horizon opens up to the south.

The house is a project of the Berlin architect Thomas Kröger, who always captures the beauty of the Uckermark in an unusual way and with great respect for the landscape. With In den Söllen he has created his first own holiday home. For this, the typological simplicity of the former farmhouse was retained in its clarity, while the many small rooms and utility spaces have been conceived differently. Thus, you walk through the house almost as if you are in a story, passing through different stages and discovering new surprises with each step. From the rustic ambience of the hallway to the impressive, open living area.

Not only has a spatial experience been created, but nature has also been brought into the rooms. Be it through the large-scale windows of the living area, the oversize round window in the guest room or the other mindfully chosen views. All this is enhanced by the calmingly monochrome and earthy atmosphere of the interiors with their clay-plastered walls, the floor of dark-fired clay tiles and the taupe-coloured fixtures, in which the colourfulness of nature is highlighted even more. And when the sun floods the kitchen in the morning, light plays everywhere.

From the former stable entrance, which is centrally connected to the cloakroom, the bathroom and a small room, a few steps lead to the spacious living area. An open fireplace with sofas on either side awaits you at the gable end and the kitchen is at the other end. To the west, there is a combined bedroom and study, and in the attic there are two more bedrooms with grain soaped floorboards from Mark Brandenburg and a bathroom in each, both of which are reached via separate interior staircases.

If at any time you are tempted to go out into the beautiful riparian landscape and the orchard, it is well worth following the tall poplars that rustle so wonderfully in the summer wind.

Owner

The multi-award-winning architect Thomas Kröger is particularly well known for his buildings in the Uckermark region, which are always set in the context of the region's natural surroundings and landscape. But his scope goes far beyond rural building. Since 2001 he has been working with his Berlin office TKA Thomas Kröger Architekten on projects at home and abroad. Previously he worked for Norman Forster in London and Max Dudler in Berlin. After various guest professorships in Stuttgart and Boston, Kröger has also been a professor of architecture at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf since 2019.
