Ferienhaus La Chalette in Lenzkirch, Raitenbuch / DE – Germany, Baden-Wuerttemberg

Holiday home La Chalette

La Chalette is a holiday house in the Black Forest, beautifully situated between Titisee, Schluchsee and Feldberg. It belongs to a farm dating back to 1659 and was once used as a tractor shed. From the outside, you can still see the building’s past, but inside, it feels like a fine wooden box: the walls, floors, ceilings and fixtures are made entirely of silver fir, which is typical of the region. This not only creates a pleasant atmosphere, but also conveys a sense of visual calm thanks to its seamless design. Generous views to the outside and cleverly placed sightlines make the living space feel even larger.

When you open the two historic barn doors on the main terrace, the living room with its sofa (which can be converted into a bed) and wood-burning stove extends up to the gable – with a ceiling height of four metres and old beams. A large window front opens onto the countryside – you can see meadows, fruit trees and the Black Forest peaks on the horizon. A steep wooden staircase leads up to the sleeping loft with a view of the starry sky through a large skylight. Discreet cupboards are integrated at the head of the beds.

The kitchen also makes optimal use of every inch of space with built-in appliances; everything you need for cooking is provided. The seating niche in the glassed-in bay window is particularly charming. In addition to the shower, the bathroom even has room for a freestanding bathtub. The window is set lower so that you can bathe while enjoying the view. The base of an old sewing machine from the neighbouring farm serves as a pedestal for the washbasin.

When the weather is good, life moves outside: La Chalette is surrounded on three sides by terraces and equipped with garden furniture, sun loungers and a barbecue – so you can enjoy the fantastic location, the clear air at an altitude of 1,000 metres and the tranquillity of the hamlet of Raitenbuch.

What to do

Hiking, climbing, swimming, boating, sightseeing, cross-country skiing, skiing, tobogganing. There are many interesting destinations in the area, such as the Feldberg mountain, Lake Schluchsee or the Wutach Gorge. The Windgfäll Pond is nearby. The shepherd's path—a hike for epicures—starts in the immediate vicinity of the house. It is only a few minutes by to reach several good restaurants (one of them is within walking distance).

Why we like this house

The rustic shed surprises with a modern interior and offers surprisingly great comfort in a small space. The living area is like a viewing platform into nature: it almost feels like being outdoors.

This house is great for

Ideal for two people. However, the house can also be used by three to four people (it is not suitable for families with small children due to the open stairs). La Chalette is also well suited for retreating to work on a creative project.
