Once you have visited Bornholm, you will never forget the island. The north, with its rocky forests, is particularly impressive – not far from the Hammershus castle ruins, you will find a landscape that is unique in Denmark.
The idea of something special, remote and sheltered is reflected in the three cabins designed by German-Danish architect Sigurd Larsen – a specialist in unusual holiday architecture – together with two partners: they allow guests to experience nature with all their senses. Their name, Løvtag, has nothing to do with love, even though the stilt houses are perfectly suited as a nest for two in the treetops. Translated into English, the Danish term simply means “leaf canopy”. They are a mixture of the concept of the classic Danish summer house and a hotel. Because even though you are virtually alone in the forest, a small breakfast is included during your stay.
The houses are built on stilts at some distance from each other, each with a tree at its centre. Depending on whether it is a pine, oak or beech tree, the respective trunk – which grows right through the middle of the living space – shapes the light, scent and atmosphere in your temporary home. The wind plays through the treetops and moves the trunk almost imperceptibly. Sigurd Larsen has designed and staged the cabins with great care, creating an experience that clearly distinguishes holidays from everyday life.
It starts with the journey: you don’t meet anyone on arrival, but load your luggage onto a handcart in the car park if necessary and, guided by a digital check-in, walk several hundred metres through the forest to your cabin. The view from the stilted cabin looks out onto the surrounding nature through bay windows with maximum glazing – depending on the time of day, the light falls into a different area of the cabin, creating a very special atmosphere. The outlook is designed so that you never see the other cabins directly. To experience nature in this place with all your senses, nature cookbooks invite you to experiment with what you find in the forest and on the beach. The showers are also special – located outside the tree house, but discreetly hidden behind expanded metal, so that you can enjoy the warm water while also taking in the wind and the forest.
This closeness to nature is underlined by the interior design and furnishings. Nothing distracts from the forest; everything emphasises the effect of what lies beyond the windows. The interior is designed with light woods, soap-treated surfaces and a deliberately restrained palette of materials. The furnishings were created in collaboration with a traditional Danish furniture manufacturer from Jutland in natural colours.
