Manzara beside the sea! The architects couple Gabi Kern-Altindis and Erdoğan Altindis have brought their successful Manzara concept from Istanbul to the idyllic port town of Ayvalik. Manzara style means living among locals in extraordinary apartments that have a homely feel. The Merdivenli Ev is such a special place. Its name, which in Turkish means stairs-street, is based on the steep alley between the house and the garden.
The house looks traditional on the outside, but inside it amazes with openness, changing vistas and thrilling contrasts. The former camel stable is now a double height living area. Historic stone walls meet a kitchen countertop and bench made of concrete and the floor brings traditional mosaics into the 21st century. The terrazzo floor and the picture in the living room were based on designs by the German artist Lars Breuer. The minimalist interior allows the character and charm of the architecture to take centre stage. A typical Manzara house features spectacular views (manzara is the Turkish word for view). And so the house in Ayvalik boasts a magnificent view: from the spacious bedroom on the first floor you can see both the old town and the blue sea with its small islands.

What to do
Ayvalik has evolved into a versatile holiday destination with many small shops and restaurants. There are numerous smaller beaches and secluded bays on the Cunda (Alibey) Island off the coast of Ayvalik. Sarimsakli is a popular beach south of Ayvalik.
