The small mountain village of Vals lies deep in the Swiss Alps – right at the back of a side valley of the Surselva region. Surrounded by impressive mountain scenery, next to the renovated Vals Rhine bridge, the two houses of Brücke 49 offer a temporary home for design lovers.
Brücke 49 Guesthouse
The old villa with its anthracite-coloured façade and white shutters, which now houses a guesthouse with four lovingly furnished guest rooms, was originally built according to the plans of a Parisian architect and combines the typical local architecture with unusually large and high-ceilinged rooms. On the first floor and under the roof, there is a suite with a living area and on each floor three double rooms that share a bathroom, with separate showers for each room.
On the first floor is the communal living and dining area as well as a modern, fully equipped kitchen. Breakfast is served here every morning with local specialities from Vals, so that everyone can start the day individually or together.
The interior is a harmonious blend of old and new: Scandinavian design objects, modern lighting and selected antique wooden furniture combine to create a harmonious whole. The old floorboards, wooden beams and wall panelling painted in light colours create a warm atmosphere.
Brücke 49 Herberge
The Herberge located in the adjoining building – an 18th century house with a weather-beaten façade and granite roof – is just as subtly curated as the guesthouse: The apartments on the first and second floors, each with two bedrooms, as well as the loft under the roof with one bedroom, are mainly furnished with furniture created by Danish designers, which emphasises the nostalgic character of the old house. Muted colours and a cast-iron fireplace create a cosy atmosphere in all three apartments.
From the garden you can enjoy the view of the village, the Rhine flowing through Vals and the Alps. Here you can drink your morning coffee, relax during the day or sit around the campfire in the evening. A wooden platform is ideal for yoga or Pilates. The houses can also be hired as a whole complex – for creative workshops, for example – including comprehensive catering. Selected design pieces from carefully chosen partners can be purchased in a small “butik”. The area offers pure nature and promises plenty of peace and relaxation – if you want to take a break in lovingly curated surroundings, this is definitely the place for you.
What to do
Located in the heart of the Swiss Alps, Vals is the perfect starting point for nature lovers – whether for hiking in spring, swimming in mountain streams in summer, cycling in autumn or skiing in winter. The Vals thermal spa designed by architect Peter Zumthor is a must for architecture and design lovers. Vals has several good restaurants, but if you like, you can also cook in Brücke, using fresh ingredients that are available in the village or can be found in the mountains: from berries to mushrooms to wild herbs.
Why we like this house
The subtle mix of simple, antique wooden furniture and modern design pieces in the middle of the Swiss Alps make the houses a special place.
This house is great for
Couples or families can treat themselves to a relaxing break here. The houses are also suitable for larger groups if they are rented together.
Owner
Ruth built Brücke with her husband and now runs it with her team.
Her wish is for all guests to feel the magic of Vals and experience what it has to offer:
“We share the little details and secrets of the place with our guests. Brücke is a place to meet old friends or make new ones, to exchange ideas and talk. It is a place of power that needs to be discovered and felt. The world stands somewhat still here and it's all about the simple things in life.”
