Zeitz – located in the south of Saxony-Anhalt between Jena and Leipzig – is a city in upheaval. One of the initiatives intended to revitalise the former industrial town is the conversion of a former pasta factory into a creative location. In 2017, Birgit and Mathias Mahnke bought the factory dating from 1909 and have since been developing the 12,000 square metre premises into a place for the visual arts and virtual reality – with exhibition areas, a co-working space and accommodation for artists.
The holiday apartment with authentic industrial charm is located in the building complex. Raw, unrendered walls, visible piping and wiring, large windows, a floor with rich patina and the open-plan layout determine the character. In the main room there is a sitting area, dining table and kitchen, as well as the sleeping area with a box-spring bed – only the bathroom is separated. Some works of art are hung on the walls – There are several works of art on the walls — which matches the creative flair of the entire area very well. The 92 square-metre loft is for two people and has a terrace with a view of the green inner courtyard.
What to do
Zeitz is situated in the Elster valley, embedded in the Saale-Unstrut region, Germany's northernmost wine-growing region. Leipzig can be reached in 29 minutes by train. The city centre is a 15-minute walk away. Bicycle paths and jogging trails are in the immediate vicinity. You can visit sights such as the pram museum or Moritzburg Castle with its park or make excursions to the cities in the region (e.g. Leipzig, Jena, Erfurt or Weimar).
