Quartier Wieck

The Quartier Wieck ensemble with its two houses WIECK9 and WIECK11 is located in the fishing village of Wieck on the Darß peninsula off Germany’s Baltic coast, just 300 metres from the Bodden lagoon. With their sleek architecture, the houses set a counterpoint to the traditional thatched houses typical of the Darß – but with its barn-like shape, they nevertheless reference their surroundings. Every detail displays the owners’ penchant for Japanese and Scandinavian design: a reduction to the essentials and the natural beauty of the materials define the character of the houses.

On the outside, the buildings are characterised by a simple design language and the contrast between the dark, rough-sawn wooden façade and the copper roof.  The interiors are bright and flooded with light and decked out in floors of shell limestone and oak in soft natural tones. Custom-made furniture, selected design classics and pieces by Finnish artists contribute to the calm, stylish ambience.

The central room is the double height dining and cooking area, which is not only illuminated on the long sides by large panorama windows, but also via skylights in the roof ridge. The separate living room with a fireplace is a perfect retreat for reading, listening to music or watching television. On the ground floor there is also a bedroom with a bathroom and sauna. A filigree staircase leads to the gallery on the upper floor and two further bedrooms as well as a bathroom. The houses have a large terrace on both the eastern and western sides.
